Weekend Update for August 2 and 3, 2008

August 7th, 2008 Posted in News

Work done to UP 428:

Bill, Collin, Rick, Jim, Ralph, and Brian all assisted in another hydro of the 428. It failed. There is still a leak around the same flexible staybolt sleeve. So much for “Wilbur the Welder”! The sleeve will have to be ground out, again, and re-welded…again! On Sunday, Jason ground-out the sleeve with the bad weld. Hopefully, Lenny will be available this upcoming weekend to re-do the welding.

Work done to the Shay:

JD started to paint the outside of the cab and tender.

Nigel and Ralph completed the final test fitting for the tube sheet (photo above). The new boiler plate has been ordered by Tom, and should be at the shop by next weekend. Once this arrives, Nigel and the Flanging crew should be able to bend the new piece and make it fit to perfection. Well, at least as to IRM perfection anyway!

Work done to the Brownhoist Crane:

Bob wire-brushed, needle-chipped, and primed the boom of the Brownhoist (photo below). This was done on about a quarter of the boom area which needs such attention before the signs are re-attached. Ralph assisted by moving the boom to a better position for Bob to work.

Work done around the Shop:

Rick, Bob, Ed, Vince, and Collin started putting up the new light fixtures in the new part of the enclosed machine shop.

Bill, Collin, and Brian hydro and hammer tested the air tank to the shop’s outside air compressor. It passed.

Vince started machining a tool, for Tom, that will be used to machine the bearing brasses for 1630.

On Sunday, during the Vintage Extravaganza, JD, Rick, and Jim, gave shop tours with 61 people. They sold some calendars, got donations, and sold that old Marklin train set. People were amazed at our work in the shop. One gentleman, who said he has been a member for twenty years, was so appreciative that we invited people in for shop tours. He was fascinated with the shop and our work. Rick told him to come back in to the shop anytime he was at the museum and that we always invite visitors, who peek in our shop, to come in and look at our work.

Oh, almost forgot…Jim checked the soda machine. We need lemonade.
