Weekend Update for July 19, 2008
July 24th, 2008 Posted in NewsWork done to the Frisco 1630:
JD continued working on the tender by cutting out the thin metal and welding in new metal.
Bruce continued cutting the crown brass for the wheel bearing (photo below).

Work done to the Shay:
Ed did a lot of grinding and fitted the test piece for the tube sheet patch needed for the Shay.
Nigel reassembled the McCabe Flanger and managed to bend another test piece very smoothly. No pull into the machine this time. Tom is ordering the boiler plate so hopefully we can bend the final tube sheet piece next Saturday, or the following weekend.
Ralph, Matt, and Bill, used a portable band-saw to cut the grate hangers (photo below). The hangers must be modified to allow for the newly cast grates.

Work done, in general, around the shop:
Rick and Ralph did more cleaning out of the area north of the shop.
Last week, we had 111 visitors come through the Steam Shop for the free tours. Tours were conducted every half hour from 11 to 5. Most of the tours lasted 20-25 minutes. We were fortunate to receive some donations. The tours were a big success! We are thinking about offering tours again on the August 3rd Vintage Transport Days.
John O’Conner (a Steam Team member who helped rebuild the drop table three years ago) brought in over $200 dollars, in donations, from the 2008 calendars. John had a monthly booth, at the DuPage County Fairgrounds “Model Train Show”, where he graciously agreed to display the calendars. Thanks John!
Brian painted the missing cylinder cover for the CB&Q 637. It will be reattached next weekend.
Matt and Brian worked on the newly cast builder’s plate for the McCabe Flanger. Mounting holes have been drilled and tapped. Brian will start painting it next weekend.
Rick attended the Board meeting on Saturday night. Minutes from the meeting should be available, in the shop, next weekend.
Stu and Bill reconfigured the hard drives, for the shop computer, and installed a new operating system.
Stu installed an AC receptacle, on the Brownhoist Crane, to allow the battery chargers to be plugged in closer to the batteries.
Stu and Bill drilled and tapped a 3/4″ hole in the new centering pawl that Tom had made for the McCabe Flanger.
